Résumé
Prior to the last race at Balmullo, excitement was building with final positions in most categories still undecided particularly as a good number of runners had only completed 3 races and had to rely on Balmullo as their final counter. As it turned out, the men’s overall standings didn’t change despite the small margin of only 4 points separating the top 3. In the MV40 category, Iain Wallace (FTR) crept past Dave Clarke (FAC) – who obviously relied on his first 4 race scores and had a night off and Lee Cessford (FTR) jumped into third place thanks to the non-appearance of Paul Harkins (FAC). MV50 group winner was Michael Mitchell (DRR) who only had to compete and finish to win. However, MV60 leader after 3 races, Gary Barker (FAC) failed to show and thus didn’t qualify. As a MV70, the mercurial Tony Martin (FAC) took first prize but Paul Sutherland missed out on 2nd place with a “no show”.
Even greater excitement was evident amongst the ladies particularly in the overall standings with no less than 8 names in with a shout of a prize, prior to Balmullo. However, with the non appearance of Amie Watt (FAC) and Susanne Lumsden (FTR / v40) this was reduced to 6, comprising only one FSenior, 3 V50 and 2 V60. At the final reckoning, Rachel Callaghan (DRR) came out on top followed by Hilary Ritchie (FAC / V50) and Innes Bracegirdle (FAC / V60). This result therefore opened up the V50 category to some surprised (but fully earned) recipients of a category prize – Liz Killean (FAC), Fiona Walker (FAC) and Sandra Gardner (FTR). Well done to them for their perseverance and tenacity. Unfortunately Carolyn Haddow of FTR “FTR’d” this race and didn’t qualify. (note – “ftr = failed to report!). With Innes taking 3rd overall spot, her friend and running chum Margaret Martin took the V60 award.
Thanks to everyone (including Gary B, John McIntyre Sen and Ky Wizards for organising the 2 Bridges event) who competed and volunteered throughout this popular Series which had been held in abeyance for the past 2 years due to Covid.
Our aim is to provide a midweek, friendly, ‘no-fuss’ but competitive running atmosphere where runners don’t need to scale back on their training for the event. The pre registration sign-up format just helps to speed up processing on the night without any obligation to run and also helps enormously in producing final results; however, ‘entry on the night’ will continue for last minute entrants. At £3 / £5 entry fee for each race this is surely VFM.
On reflection, prizes for each individual race will return in 2023 although this will mean a much reduced prize value / list for overall standings. Feel free to submit your comments.
