Dave's Cupar and St Andrews Training

Unread post by Fife AC Admin »

This Tuesday (10th October) will be the last Cupar session for the year meeting at Wetlands. From 17th October (the evening of the AGM), meet at the winter venue, Bell Baxter carpark.

There will be a few changes, in response to some concerns raised by Fife Council last winter about athlete safety. The Council received a complaint about what was perceived as a dangerous situation on the unlit part of Drum Road, and it is the Council’s view that this area is unsuitable for regular organised running groups.

As well as avoiding using that route, and making hi-vis compulsory, we also want to establish some firmer rules on how junior athletes are supervised during warm-up and warm-down sessions. We also want to ensure that the coaches know exactly which junior athletes are present at each session, and that they have emergency contact details for every athlete (including adults), should any incident arise.

So, in summary:

1. We’ll no longer use Drum Road and Cupar Road for warming up, due to the lack of street lighting.
2. High-vis clothing will become compulsory for all winter sessions.
3. Junior athletes (under 16) must remain with a group lead by an adult for the entire warm-up (and warm-down if applicable).
4. All athletes must complete an emergency contact details form and hand it in to their coach.
5. A list of common-sense rules for training groups has been published, and all athletes, by attending a training group, agree to abide by these.
6. All junior athletes must sign in and out with a coach at the start and end of each session.

The training group rules (which also apply to other groups training on the roads in darkness) are published here:

If a parent or carer does not remain with a junior athlete throughout the entire training session, then it is their responsibility to ensure that the junior athlete understands and abides by the training group rules. In particular, they must ensure that the junior athlete has appropriate clothing, has signed in at the start of the session, and knows which adult they are running with for the warm-up/down. They should also remind the junior athlete that a warm-up is supposed to be slow! Athletes under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the entire training session.

Although the focus here is on junior athletes, adults are expected to set a good example to juniors by observing the training group rules, wearing hi-vis at all times, avoiding running in the road where pavement is available, being cautious when crossing roads, etc etc.

It will take a few sessions to get these new arrangements bedded in, but soon the expectation will be that athletes will not be permitted to take part without hi-vis clothing and having submitted emergency contact details. To allow for the inevitable occasional forgotten hi-vis jacket, the club is hoping to obtain a stock of hi-vis tabards that will be available at sessions for short-term loan.

In preparation for the new arrangements, all members of the Cupar and St Andrews training groups are requested to print the emergency details form from the link below, complete it, and bring it to the next training session.
