Cupar 5 Entry Form

Unread post by Fife AC Admin »

Entry forms for the Cupar 5 are available here. It would be appreciated if runners could print off the form, fill it in, and bring to registration.

Sorry for asking the question, but is this likely to go ahead? Having run down there at the weekend the road surface is terrible, worse than last year.

The race committee of the Cupar 5, to be held on 1/3/2014, would like to announce that, because of erosion, the surface of St Mary’s Rd over which the race will be run is less than ideal for a Fife AC road race
While there are long stretches of good road there are also potholes and eroded areas where athletes should be prepared to take extra care in navigating.

Marshals will be deployed on the course to help runners identify the worst of the eroded areas and athletes are asked to listen to any instructions from the marshals.

The committee will move that start/finish line about 200m west to avoid the worst erosion and utilise the better road conditions at the turning point by moving it the same distance.

1st aid and a doctor will be in attendance should there be any unwelcome accidents.

Should you be willing to run under these conditions you will be made very welcome and of course be able to enjoy a great day out and a traditional Fife AC après race tea.

"the road surface is terrible" that is correct.

"eroded areas where athletes should be prepared to take extra care in navigating" - it's not supposed to be an obstacle course.

"Marshals will be deployed on the course to help runners identify the worst of the eroded areas and athletes are asked to listen to any instructions from the marshals." - otherwise you might break an ankle and it's very unfair to ask marshalls to have that responsibility. Really in a road race do you want to slow down to try and figure out how to negotiate sections of crumbling tarmac?

It was in fine temporarily repaired condition last year and yet was cancelled without enough warning.
This year those temporary repairs have crumbled as expected and the road is genuinely in a bad way.

So why not just cancel it this year and save runners from all over travelling to Cupar for the privilege of serious injury?

££££'s that's why.

Chris - we don't criticise your races in public, nor question your safety arrangements or motives for putting them on. Indeed, you are free to use our website to advertise them.

We'd thank you to extend the same courtesy to us. If you don't like the race, don't come.

If holding the Cupar 5 were about money (and it's not)......
then the money would be well spent.
No other club gives so much to its members:-

Pays their Scottish Athletics affiliation fee and levy.
Pays entry fees to...East XC League, East XC Relays, National XC, National XC Relays, Scottish Rd Relays, Scottish junior Rd Champs. Track and field relay teams (when asked).
Pays a small fortune to provide coach transport for junior track and field. Pays big share towards Kingdom Junior Athletics T & F costs.
Subsidises a number of training group venues.
Promotes more races than any club in UK. Won't speak for anyone else...but my two remaining events (Strawberry, and Hallowe'en Races) make a loss...not important as its a club occasion.
Has provided grants to both junior and senior athletes over the years. Coaching qualification costs.

There's probably a few things I've missed out too !!!

All clubs organising races have a duty of care towards the athletes taking part in their races, and as part of
been granted a race permit they have to complete a risk assessment. It seems that FAC have been diligent
in that respect by informing runners of the poor state of the road & putting in proceedures to ensure runners safety.
As GK said it's now up to the runners to decide if they want to run-hopefully we'll get a good turn out.

As for the club paying the SA Levy etc I may stand to be corrected but I thought we as members paid that in our subs

Taken from the website:- Annual Subscription + Scottish Athletics Membership + Per Capita Fee paid to Scottish Athletics =
TOTAL FEE Adult (aged 21 and over £13 + £18 + £7 = £38.00.

Cheers Tony

The road has now had about 75 potholes filled in and while it's not in as good shape as it was last year (when it was unjustly cancelled for being unsafe) it is much better than it was last week.
If it was Fife Council who repaired it then they must have forgotten last year when they went to a lot of trouble fixing it up just for the race only for it to be cancelled and for them to be slagged off.

Incidentally my races are fun runs which are exciting and safe and open to all abilities and ages with all the donated monies going to charity. Criticise that if you like.

"I am going out to Cupar tomorrow to look again at the course with Gary Barker and plan the deployment of marshals".

Tony....the member's Scottish Athletics fee and levy is indeed included in the membership fee. The club does, however, go through the mechanics of then paying it for you.
Another local club charges a total of £37, the members then have to pay the SAF membership of £18. Another charges £28 and does not include the £18. The point is that FAC members get a good deal. Do other clubs pay their members fees for so many races ??? Would be good to know ???
The £13's the club actually banks is hardly covered if a member enters the National XC, the Rd Relay Champs or the East XC Relays (to name but three
