Fife AC athletes were in action far and wide last weekend whilst on home soil 327 runners contested the Chariots of Fire Races over the west Sands last Sunday.

Nony Mordi continued her come-back to top level athletics in Geneva, Switzerland, winning the triple jump with a 12.95m effort six centimetres ahead of Krisztina Hoffer (Hungary).
Sport City, Manchester hosted the British Milers Club meeting where Jenny Tan, Newton of Falkland, placed 2nd over 800m in 2 minutes 07.91 seconds, five seconds faster than her East of Scotland title winning performance the previous weekend.
In Dublin two Fife under 20 athletes represented Scottish Universities against Irish Universities. Jennifer Cruickshanks placed 2nd in the 3,000m steeplechase timed at 12 minutes 18.12 seconds while Zach Delaney finished 3rd in the men’s race in 10:21.67.
Down at Leeds under 20 and under 17 junior athletes represented the Kingdom Athletics team at the Northern Premier match.
Kirkcaldy under 20 junior Cameron Thomson won the 3,000m in 10 minutes 34.47 seconds while Euan Berry bagged a brace of middle distance second places clocking 2 minutes 05.32 seconds over 800m as well as 4 minutes 35.82 seconds for the 1500m B race. East of Scotland under 20 champion Jack Robb, Glenrothes, also claimed second place timed at 52.34 seconds for his 400m. In the sprints Kieran McGhee placed 3rd in the 100m (11.98) and 4th in the 200m (24.39).

It was a busy weekend for Fife under 15 Tayport athlete Struan Christie. Struan competed at Grangemouth on the Saturday placing second in the Scottish Schools S1 boys triathlon championships with a total 1311 points (long jump 5.05m, shot 9.99m, 600m 1;46.51). On the Sunday Struan posted two wins and a third place at the under13/under15 young athletes match at Inverness. Struan won the 100m in 12.91 seconds and also won the long jump 5.04m before rounding off with 3rd over 200m in a personal best 26.12 seconds. Cian Young bagged good points in the B races winning the 100m (13.10) and placing 2nd in the 200m (27.17).
Isobel Simpson starred in the under 15 girls events winning the 75m hurdles (13.06) and the long jump (4.25m) as well as placing 3rd in the 200m (28.88). Abbie Hendry placed 5th in the 100m (12.37) and 1st in the long jump B (4.01m). Emma Malcolm, Strathkinness, took two 6th placed in the 200m (29.59) and 75m hurdles (15.3).
For the under 13 athletes Abbie Coote won the 75m hurdles, placed 4th in the 75m sprint (11.36) and 2nd in the high jump B (1.25m). Sasa Tough finished 3rd in the 150m (22.67), 3rd in the 75m sprint B (11.43) and 3rd in the high jump (1.25m).
Campbell Palmer excelled in the under 13 boy’s events winning the 100m (13.47), 200m (27.06) and long jump (4.74m).
The strains of Vangelis sent forth a record field of 227 runners clad in white at the 3rd Chariots of Fire 5km race held over the West Sands, St Andrews.
Only eight juniors made the trip in the coach north to inverness.


Unattached runner Richard Cockbain headed the field in 18 minutes 14 seconds chased by Alan Hume (Central AC) 18.22. St Andrews Councillor Brian Thomson came home in 3rd – 18.38.
Placing 16th overall Sophie Mullins (Fife AC) continued on the come-back trail following illness, a clear female winner in 21 minutes 10 seconds.

Kirkcaldy hill runner Nigel Fowler completed the tough Yetholm Hill Race (8 mile/2,500ft) straggling the English/Scottish border placing 202nd amongst the large field in 1 hour 46 minutes 05 seconds.

Newly crowned East of Scotland under 18 men’s 1500m and 800m champion Bruce Millar, Kirkcaldy, was in record breaking form at the Ravenscraig Park one mile series at Kirkcaldy last week.
Bruce, who clocked 4 minutes 07 seconds for the 1500m last weekend at Meadowbank, posted a winning 4 minutes 35 seconds over the testing one mile park course, two seconds inside the course record. Under 20 Fife colleague Ewan Paton finished runner-up in 4 minutes 52 seconds with Liam Hutson completing a Fife clean-sweep in third.
Fife junior Abbie Steggles placed 12th overall, first female in 6 minutes 02 seconds while in 14th overall Carnegie’s Isobel Burnett improved her own over 50 female record to 6 minutes 04 seconds.
It was good to see a large turn-out of twenty-four juniors from the Fife AC Balwearie training group. The next Ravenscraig one mile race is Tues 25th June 7pm.

The Strawberry Novice run at Cairnie Fruit Farm on Wednesday 26th June aims to encourage both novice runners and beginners over a scenic 2 mile course around the farm centre with those runners who might normally be nearer the back of the field contesting the honours at the sharp end of the field!
As a rough guide runners with a 5km time of better than 23 minutes (females) and 21 minutes (males) are banned !The race starts at 7.45 pm with entries (£3) taken on the night at the Farm Shop. A 1 Km junior race starts at 7.00 pm (P4 and younger) followed at 7.15 pm P5 and older 1km. At 7.30pm a junior two mile. Entry £1.
