Having departed his Flagstaff base along the iconic Route 66, Fife AC athlete Andrew Lemoncello certainly got his ‘kicks’ but not as anticipated, and…. in Las Vegas.
The 30-year old GB athlete, contesting his first event of the year, lined up alongside 900 runners at the Las Vegas 5km Road Race hoping to cash in on a good time along the famous Vegas Strip.
With the leading two athletes 40m clear approaching the final kilometre Andrew moved into fourth place and ironically within sight of The Coliseum, a keen battle commenced with an Ethiopian runner currently holding third place. It was just as the Fife athlete moved past his rival that the duel intensified.
Andrew commented: “I kid you not, the guy drop kicked me as I passed him. The whole thing was caught on camera fortunately and he was later disqualified.”
There was, however, an Ethiopian winner as Nahom Mesfin breasted the finish line pipping USA’s Chris Barnicle with both runners sharing a time of 14 minutes 14 seconds. Lemoncello followed home in 3rd clocking 14 minutes 31 seconds, three seconds inside the winning time posted at the Scottish 5km Championships just over a week ago.
Andrew reflected after the race:” Bit sore now bit I’m happy to have blown the cobwebs out of my legs and get the season kicked off. I never thought I would get injured by being kicked during a race. It’s a rough sport !”
Age is no barrier to Cupar veteran John McNally, the 76 year old long serving Fife AC member got up on his bike for last Sunday’s Etape 81 mile cycle event. John completed the testing, hilly course through the wind and rain in 5 hours 11 minutes, 33 minutes faster than his 2012 effort.

There was an encouraging turn out of young athletes at last Sunday’s Petrofec League at Caird Park, Dundee, supported by a large number of parents.
Kirkcaldy under 14 athlete Adam Scott was an emphatic winner over 800m timed at 2 minutes 16 seconds eleven seconds clear of the opposition. Tayport athlete Struan Christie celebrated double victory winning the 80m hurdles (13.5) and the 200m (26.5). Calum Mitchell, Kirkcaldy clocked a fine 24.7 seconds in the under 18’s 200m placing second.
In the girls events there were under 12’s wins for Charlie Webster (150m/27.20) and Abbie Brierley (long jump/2.71m). Abby Coutt won the under14 girls 80m sprint in 13.8 seconds while over 800m Abby Steggles placed 2nd (2:40.1) and Louise McCullagh won the B race (2:45.2).
The under 16 Girls section produced second places for Katy Aitken (800m/2:38.5) and Sarah Paterson (800m B/2:48.3). Isobel Simpson, Newport, won the 200m B race with a commendable 27.9 seconds. Laura Gibson’s senior women’s 800m also netted 2nd place points timed at 2 minutes 32.3 seconds.
