Attention all Fife AC U17 and U20 athletes

Unread post by Fife AC Admin »

As you might know, Fife AC is part of a composite team called Kingdom Athletics, with Pitreavie and Dundee Hawkhill. We complete in the Premier Division of the UK Youth Development League. Last year there were no matches but the previous summer, 2019, Kingdom won the Northern Division, and we got to compete at the UK National Finals in Manchester, which was a fantastic weekend. The season usually involves 4 matches in northern England, against a variety of English clubs.

We travel south on Saturday by bus, stay in a Premier Inn, compete on Sunday and then travel home. We need 2 U17 and 2 U20 per track event, and 3 in total per field event, male and female, so we generally have a big team. Of course it’s great when the team does well and in part we do well because we are a team, and we all support each other. Athletes can finish first or eighth in their event but they still add points to the team total, so everyone’s performance is valued. It’s usually a great deal of fun, and the athletes really enjoy themselves and make new friends. It’s also very motivating for their athletics.

This year we’ve had to miss the first two fixtures but the third match is in Hull, the weekend of 24/25th July. Apologies for the late notice but as you can imagine, organising the team in Covid times is a tad complicated! We really hope you/your athlete will be able to come and compete. We need to get an idea about numbers as quickly as possible so that we can book accommodation. Therefore please can you go to the Kingdom Athletic Facebook page and complete the Google form asap and let us know if you can come or not. Alternatively please feel free to email me if you’re not a Facebook user. We really need this info asap. In theory we should have far too many athletes but that’s rarely the case! Once we know who is available to complete, we’ll select a team and let you know if you’ve been selected.

We have emailed this info to present Fife AC U17/U20 athletes but we know some people’s membership has lapsed during the last year. If you know of anyone else who might like to complete, please feel free to share the information with them – but they would need to renew in order to compete. We’re also aware that many people might feel a bit rusty when they think about competing in Track and Field because it’s a while since they had the opportunity – don’t worry, many people are in the same position!

If you have any questions, just email Lesley Thirkell (lt@st-andrews.ac.uk).

Here is the info from Facebook:

With restrictions lifting we have the potential opportunity to start travelling again to the matches in England. The season has two matches left that we are entitled to participate as a Team in Hull on 25th July and York on 5th September.
We have confirmation from the bus company that they are happy to take us. We are working on the hotel to get confirmation on the rooms.
We do have some guidelines for this
1. We anticipate that most, if not all, of the adults on the bus will have had both vaccinations by late July
2. We anticipate that some, but not many, athletes will have had either one or both vaccinations by late July
3. All athletes and officials will be strongly encouraged to take a lateral flow test on the Thursday or Friday before travelling. Tests are easily accesible and can be ordered by mail from https://test-for-coronavirus.service.go ... /condition
4. Anyone who tests positive, who is already self isolating, or who displays any symptoms of Covid will not travel to the competition
5. On the coach, everyone will be encouraged to wear a mask but it is recognised this is not necessarily practical for a long bus journey.
6. Currently Covid restrictions mean that it may not be possible to eat in the Premier Inn restaurant on the Saturday evening as a group like we would normally do. If that is the case we will Instead time the journey to eat at a service station on Saturday evening before arriving at the hotel. If Covid restrictions are changed to allow us to eat in the hotel restaurant, with the whole team sitting and eating together, we will do that
7. We will aim to have two rather than three athletes per room in the Premier Inn.
8. Currently Covid restrictions mean that it may not be possible to eat breakfast in the Premier Inn restaurant on Sunday morning as we would normally do. The team will need to bring extra food with them to eat for breakfast. If Covid restrictions are changed and it is possible to eat breakfast in the hotel restaurant as usual, we will do that
9. The match will take place following the Covid restrictions in England at the time. It is unlikely that masks will be required or that social distancing will be enforced.
10. The team will need to bring food with them for lunch or possibly walk to a supermarket to buy food on Sunday. Please note English supermarkets generally don't open before 12 and sometimes 1pm on a Sunday.
11. All team members are strongly encouraged to bring hand sanitiser with them on the trip
What we need at this stage is everyone who is keen to travel to compete and their parents are also happy for this to happen to fill in our Google Form so we can check we have sufficient numbers. If you can do this please ASAP as we need to finalise things with the hotel.
