Fife AC junior runners put in podium performances at the Scottish Junior Road Race Championships at Heriot Watt University, Riccarton.

In the cold, wet conditions Kirkcaldy’s Adam Scott claimed the individual silver medal in the under 13 boys race timed at 9 minutes 46 seconds for the 2,800m course. Winner Ryan Gray (Inverclyde) won in 9.29 making it a clean sweep of titles having earlier this year won the National Cross-Country title plus the Inter-District title. Crail athlete George Rees followed home in 9th (10.16) and with Stuart Aitken 37th (11.06) Fife took the team silver medals totalling 48 points behind winners Giffnock North (25) with RH Cambuslang in third (52).
Louise Mccullagh finished 20th in the under 13 girl’s 2,800m with Abbie Steggles 25th (11.59).
Tristan Rees contested the under 15 boy’s 4,500m race finishing 20th in 16 minutes 47 seconds followed by Ryan Brocklebank 29th (17.44). Lundin Links athlete Ailsa Cruickshanks came home 19th in the under 15 girl’s race clocking 18 minutes 39 seconds with Katy Aitken 26th (19.11).
The under 17 men’s race was held over a 5,600m course where Logan Rees, Crail, excelled to place 8th clocking 19 minutes 34 seconds with Bruce Millar 10th (19.49) and Ronan McInstray 31st (23.02). The team placed 6th with 49 points only four points off the bronze medal position.

Fortunes rose and fell at the Cairn O’Mohr Errol 6km Race last Sunday with early leader Tony Jackson (Perth Road Runners) straying off course leaving Chris Russell, Glenrothes, to bag his third Errol win.
Jackson forged ahead over mud-soaked footpaths along the River Tay building up a substantial lead ahead of the chasing Chris, before his navigational error on entering the Errol Park Estate. 2011 and 2012 winner Chris, surprised to find himself in the lead, ran on to the finish timed at 22 minutes 17 seconds with Ian McNulty (Dundee Hawkhill) coming through into runner-up position seventy-seven seconds adrift.
Sadly the Errol race saw the last appearance of Freuchie runner Jim Close in FAC colours. Over 30 years Jim has been a loyal club memberr serving as committee member, men's trcak & field team manager plus producing/editing the club mag' Relay back in the late 80's. Wife Maureen has been a regular, valued helper at many Fife races.
Unattached runner Christine Cuthill claimed the female award placing 15th overall in 27 minutes 50 seconds fifteen seconds and one place ahead of Dundee Hawkhill junior Emily Harrower.

Kirkcaldy runner Colin Brown was the clubs first runner home at the Alloa Half Marathon finishing 63rd out of the 1251 finishers timed at a personal best 80 minutes 56 seconds. Angela Howe was well up the field of female finishers 172nd overall/18th female while in 225th/23rd female Forfar Fife AC member Addy Gerrard claimed the women’s over 50 award.

The Inverness Half Marathon also attracted a large field with 1564 finishers. Keith Taylor, Newport, placed a fine 57th clocking a personal best 83 minutes 44 seconds while over 70 athlete Andy Wright, Kingsbarns, finished 868th in 1:58.36 (chip time 1:57.34).

The previous week three Fife AC members were in action at the Dambuster Duathlon at Rutland Water, the UK Championships. Colin Brown placed 33rd in his category timed at 37 minutes 23 seconds for the opening 10km run followed by 85 minutes 31 seconds for the 42km bike stage. A final 5km run in 16 minutes 49 seconds gave Colin a total (with transition) of 2 hours 23 minutes 14 seconds. Gauldry athlete Fiona Bracegirdle finished fourth in the 20-24 age category with splits of 42.02/90.00/1858 for a total 2:33.32. George Black, Kingskettle, defied age and the testing weather conditions to win the over 70 veteran title (48.14/85.23/22.42 – 2:39.56).

Last week was also an encouraging time for Fife AC members at the Kirkcaldy and Central Fife Sports Awards evening held at the Adam Smith College. Kirkcaldy coach Steve Doig, Kinghorn, won the Coach of the Year Award while Adam Scott, Stephanie Pennycook, Lorraine Brown and Janet McWhinnie all finished runners-up in their respective categories. Also runners-up in the Team Award were Adam Scott, James Berry, Bruce Millar together with Pitreavie junior Ben Potrykus for their efforts in gaining Balwearie High School the Scottish Schools Road Relay title.

The final race in the nightmare series takes place tomorrow Wed. 20th March from Ceres, meet 7pm for 7.30pm start. Entry on the night £2 (includes stovies at Ceres Inn).
The Norman’s Law Hill Race 5.5 mile takes place Sat. 30th March at 2.30pm from Luthrie. Emily Hill junior one mile hill race at 2pm. All entries on the day at Luthrie Village Hall.
