HILL RUNNING NEAR LAMBS/SHEEP

Unread post by Ian Hawkins »

Some FAC hill runners have upset the farmer who owns land at the Bonnet Stane side of the Lomonds, up from Gateside. Seemingly the runners concerned scattered sheep who are lambing.

We have apologised to the farmer and agreed to advise members to take care when runing in the hills during the lambing season.

Runners should be aware that if there are sheep and lambs in a field, runners/ walkers/ etc should take extra special care not to disperse or alarm them; this is particularly acute when the ewes are pregnant or the lambs are very new born. If that means sticking to the perimeter, going a different way, so be it.

Enjoy your running but please be mindful of the above comments at this time of year.

Thank you for posting that. It was explained to me by the farm that sheep will ignore walkers but if people are running they assume danger and start to run themselves. Unfortunately a group ran down the field at speed scattered the sheep just as a ewe gave birth to one twin with second one half in and half out. This group were unaware of the problem. Compounding this was the popularity of the area yesterday with 2 other groups running in the same area an hour or so later and at least one dog walker who did not have their dog on a lead. The shepard was at the end of his tether by lunchtime. I believe the other running club will be avoiding this area for a while. The farmer appreciated that no malice was intended.

Hi all, we are approaching lambing season again. Different farms on the Lomonds and surrounding areas lamb at slightly different times so we must be aware from now on until the end of May. As Ruwan explained last year, sheep will be spooked by a runner but not a walker. Please pass on this message to any other running groups you may be involved in.

Thank you
